The Splendour of Chinese Bronzes: Masterpieces from the National Museum of China

INTRODUCTION

The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and the National Museum of China have collaborated to present The Splendour of Chinese Bronzes: Masterpieces from the National Museum of China, presenting over 150 bronzes from the collection of the National Museum of China. Bronzeware has played an exceptionally significant role in the history of human civilisation. In ancient China, bronzeware, commonly referred to as ‘Jin’ or ‘Jijin’, was almost always associated with early civilisation. It is the most important representative evidence that reveals the origin, development, and flourishing of early Chinese civilisation. Ancient bronzeware is one of China’s significant cultural heritage that boasts rich categories, unique shapes, elegant patterns, and complex smelting and casting techniques. Due to its profound achievement, it plays a vital role in global art history.

Divided into five sections, the exhibition systematically presents the developmental history of bronzeware through its visual artistry, decoration and pattern, inscriptions and calligraphy, technical skill, and corrosion representation. The time-honoured exhibits span an extended period, and feature a rich array of categories and shapes. Through these national treasures, the exhibition offers audiences a window to better understand the development of early Chinese civilisation, as well as the rich connotations and important characteristics of Chinese culture.
