Macao Government Tourism Office
The Macao Government Tourism Office and the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) under the Cultural Affairs Bureau’s Macao Museum of Art (MAM) have collaborated for a long time. Over the past two decades, both have joined hands to present large-scale exhibitions locally and globally. These exhibitions have not only received a great response from local audiences, but also from scholars, art enthusiasts and tourists at home and abroad, and are important cultural events in Macao. They have become renowned cultural highlights of the city.
This September, the MAM once again collaborates with two significant Chinese cultural organisations – the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Museum – to present Yun Shouping: Paintings and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Museum. The exceptional collections from both museums feature the remarkable artworks of Yun Shouping – a revered master from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties – his family members and fellow artists. The display offers an invaluable glimpse of the artistic styles of this important member of the ‘Six Masters of the early Qing period’.
Yun Shouping’s exploration of calligraphy and painting was never bound to traditions. He took nature as his mentor, crafted his style and left a profound legacy. This exhibition features almost one hundred exhibits in three sections: ‘Masterpieces – Craftsmanship Beyond Nature’, ‘Disciples and Successors’ and ‘Fellow Artists’. It comprehensively introduces viewers to Yun’s artistic evolution, and the calligraphy and paintings of artists who influenced him, were influenced by him, and related to him.
I believe this exhibition will boost cultural exchanges between Macao and the Chinese mainland while displaying the beauty of traditional Chinese culture and art to Macao residents and tourists. As audiences admire the beauty depicted in these artworks, they will gain a deeper understanding of the literati paintings and calligraphy of the Ming and Qing dynasties and an appreciation of China’s profound civilisation. Macao is a tourist city, and a high-quality exhibition such as this helps the city establish its cultural image. The Macao Government Tourism Office is delighted to participate in this collaborative exhibition, and I wish the show great success.
