Yun Shouping is hailed as one of the ‘Six Masters of the early Qing period’. He focused on landscape paintings in his early years; later, his ‘boneless’ flower paintings earned him critical acclaim. He passed on a lot of traditional painting techniques and advocated realistic depictions. Meanwhile, he crafted a natural, refined and refreshing style and left a profound impact on the artists of the following generations. This guided tour will explore how Yun Shouping absorbed techniques from old masters and crafted his realistic depiction while also understanding how he sought mentorship from nature and traditions and his connections with his artist peers, such as Wang Hui.
