Special Exhibition from the Palace Museum

INTRODUCTION

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China this year, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government collaborates with the Palace Museum to present the Palace of Double Brilliance: Special Exhibition from the Palace Museum. Showcasing a grand array of precious cultural relics, the exhibition also advances Macao’s development as ‘One Centre, One Platform and One Base’.

The Palace Museum, built on the foundations of the Ming and Qing imperial palaces, serves as a living testament to the history of the Ming and Qing courts. Palace of Double Brilliance: Special Exhibition from the Palace Museum delves into the stories and the figures associated with the ‘Palace of Double Brilliance’, the residence of Emperor Qianlong when he was a prince. After marrying at the age of 17, Hongli, the future Emperor Qianlong, moved into the Second Western Residence of the ‘Palace of Heavenly Purity’. He ascended the throne at 25, reigning over the country for six decades and later serving as Emperor Emeritus. His former residence, known as ‘The Dwelling of the Hidden Dragon’, was soon upgraded to the ‘Palace of Double Brilliance’, a place the emperor held dear for 72 years. Emperor Qianlong also devoted his life to unifying the multi-ethnic Chinese nation. In fact, he elevated the Qing dynasty to new heights, building upon the prosperous reigns of both his grandfather Emperor Kangxi and his father Emperor Yongzheng. In short, Emperor Qianlong became one of the most renowned emperors in Chinese history.

Palace of Double Brilliance: Special Exhibition from the Palace Museum is divided into four sections, showcasing a carefully selected collection of over 130 items from the Palace Museum. This exhibition tells the stories of those who were associated with the Palace of Double Brilliance, offering glimpses into the emperor’s roles as son, husband, and the sovereign who elevated the Qing dynasty to new heights and cemented its place as a significant period of Chinese history. Experience a comprehensive presentation of the grandeur of ancient times and the rich history of the Palace of Double Brilliance.
