Palace of Double Brilliance

Special Exhibition from the Palace Museum

The Macao Foundation has always been dedicated to promoting various cultural activities and actively supporting the prosper development of local cultural initiatives. As one of the key supporters of the cultural sector in Macao, we have participated in and supported the annual exhibition of cultural relics from the Ming and Qing dynasties, co-organised by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) and the Palace Museum, since Macao’s return to the motherland in 1999. Over the years, both museums have presented a variety of exhibitions with different themes, providing unique opportunities for the citizens of Macao and international visitors to appreciate a wide range of precious Chinese cultural relics. The annual exhibition has become a highly anticipated cultural event, consistently attracting large audiences. On the occasion of the grand celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, the Macao Foundation is honoured to support the Palace of Double Brilliance: Special Exhibition from the Palace Museum, organised in collaboration with the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the MAM and the Palace Museum.

This year’s thematic exhibition focuses on the Palace of Double Brilliance (Chonghua Gong), a historical building that held special meaning for Emperor Qianlong. The emperor presided over the last flourishing period of China’s feudal dynasty and was a ruler of remarkable talent and vision, who achieved brilliant success in both political and military realms, while also making outstanding contributions to cultural undertakings. He passionately embraced poetry, literature, calligraphy, and painting, and his enthusiasm for collecting cultural relics was particularly impressive. Under his leadership, extensive canons such as the Siku Quanshu (Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature) and the Essentials of the Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature were completed, serving as treasures of Chinese culture.

The artefacts showcased in this exhibition primarily come from the Palace of Double Brilliance, a setting for many significant cultural activities as well as private moments of the emperor. Through these precious items, audiences in Macao and visitors worldwide can gain a direct experience of the cultural charm and historical depth of the Qianlong era, gaining deeper insights into the emperor’s cultural literacy and artistic pursuits.

I hope this exhibition fosters a deeper sense of culture identity among Macao citizens and contributes to the richness and diversity of the city’s cultural landscape.

I wish the exhibition great success!

President of the Macao Foundation
