Reflections of Maritime Connections

16th-19th Century Sino-Portuguese Cultural Exchange

Macao Foundation

Since its establishment, the Macao Foundation has been dedicated to promoting the city’s cultural industry. In 1999, with Macao’s return to the embrace of the motherland, the Macao Museum of Art and the Palace Museum embarked on their first collaboration. Since then, these two esteemed institutions have worked together annually, and the Macao Foundation is proud to play a role in these collaborations. Over the years, we have joined forces to present numerous highly anticipated exhibitions, offering rich cultural experiences to both tourists and residents.

This year, the exhibition Reflections of Maritime Connections: 16th–19th Century Sino-Portuguese Cultural Exchange vividly illustrates the trade, cultural exchanges, and official interactions of the period, highlighting Macao’s crucial role in the cultural dialogue between the two nations. The display features invaluable collections from esteemed Chinese and Portuguese institutions, including porcelain, silk, paintings, and maps. These items not only provide a glimpse into this significant chapter of history but also capture the essence of human civilisations. The exhibition celebrates the richness of Chinese culture while also revealing the history of cultural exchanges and cooperations between China and the West.

Culture, the soul of a nation and its people, is also a city’s competitive advantage. As a hub of Chinese and Western cultural fusion, Macao is steeped in rich cultural heritage and unique city charm. We are committed to protecting and passing on the city’s cultural heritage and advancing its cultural innovation and evolution. Through collaborations with global and national cultural institutions, we are proactive in bringing in excellent exhibitions and cultural activities. Our goal is to provide Macao residents with a unique opportunity to connect with and understand different cultures.

We believe that cultural development thrives through the collective efforts of the government, society, and individuals. By joining forces, we can elevate Macao’s cultural industry to new heights, enriching the city with an even more captivating cultural essence.
