Reflections of Maritime Connections

16th-19th Century Sino-Portuguese Cultural Exchange

Tourism Office

Culture and tourism have always been mutually reinforcing. Culture is the essence of tourism, while tourism embodies cultural expression. Steeped in historical significance and diverse traditions, Macao boasts a vast array of cultural heritage and unique tourism resources. For many years, the Macao Government Tourism Office has been dedicated to fostering the integrated development of culture and tourism, establishing a distinctive brand for Macao’s cultural tourism.

We are honoured to continue our long-term partnership with the Macao Museum of Art under the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Palace Museum. This collaboration has introduced a series of engaging exhibitions to the city, providing visitors with opportunities to deepen their appreciation of and interest in Chinese culture.

This year’s exhibition, a unique collaboration with the Palace Museum and three Portuguese cultural institutions, delves into Sino-Portuguese exchanges from the 16th to the 19th centuries. This partnership allows us to present a diverse array of exhibits that highlight Macao’s pivotal role in the cultural interactions between the two nations. These treasures offer a fascinating journey through history and human civilisation, guiding visitors through time to experience the fusion and collision of Sino-Portuguese cultures, while also appreciating Macao’s rich history along the Maritime Silk Road.

Cultural tourism is more than a means of travel; it is a way of life. It invites individuals to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, expanding their perspectives and deepening their understanding. The Macao Government Tourism Office will continue to strengthen its partnerships with cultural sectors, steadily enhancing cultural tourism products and improving service quality to provide visitors with a more enriching cultural tourism experience.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to all the staff who have dedicated themselves to bringing this exhibition to life. I am confident that this exhibition will become a new highlight of Macao’s cultural tourism, inspiring visitors to experience the charm of our city’s culture.
