LIU OUSHENG(1949 – )
Liu Ousheng, born in 1949 in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is a ‘Master of Guangdong Arts and Crafts’. He graduated from the Sculpture Faculty of Guangzhou Fine Arts Institute and was the favourite student of sculpture master Pan He. Among all the ceramic masters in Shiwan, the kneading skills of Liu Ousheng are considered remarkably distinctive. His style is vivid, clear, rough, natural, and powerful. His superior sculpting techniques come from his treatment of skin texture and glaze colour, which are kneaded by hand and blended naturally. His powerful, untrammelled works are prized by collectors in and outside China.
His representative works include ‘The 108 Generals of the Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan)’, ‘Qi Baishi’, ‘Shi Tao’, ‘Wang Wei’, ‘Wang Mian’, ‘Zhang Daqian’, ‘Tiger’, ‘Fish Hawk’, ‘Arhat Reaching for the Stars’ and ‘Bruce Lee’. His works encompass various themes, and his portrait sculptures exhibit a lifelike appearance and spirit, created with tempered force and sympathy.
Liu’s ceramic works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, France, Brazil, the United States, and other countries. ‘The 108 Generals of the Water Margin’, collected by the Macao Museum of Art, was displayed in a touring exhibition of Australia. His works are collected by numerous ar t ga l leri es, museums, and collectors.
