Friends of MAM Gathering

Members' Activities in the Theme of the Yun Shouping Exhibition for Friends of MAM

2023/10/29 - 2023/10/29

Qing painter Yun Shouping (1633—1690) claimed to be ‘Nantian, the man who grows and waters flowers’ in an inscription of a painting. He sought nature as his mentor and championed that ‘extreme splendour is part of nature’. He focused on realistic depiction and elevated the ‘boneless’ flower painting techniques to a higher level. His flowers are vivid, refreshing and natural. To celebrate Yun Shouping: Paintings and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Museum, the MAM presents a series of exclusive flower-themed activities for the Friends of MAM.

Friends of MAM Gathering

Those versed in floral art have a pleasant character; those versed in painting seek perfection; those versed in playing the qin are composed; and those who like to drink tea are calm.

Flower arrangements, paintings, playing the qin and drinking tea have long been regarded as symbols of elegance among literati. To celebrate Yun Shouping: Paintings and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Museum, this Friends of MAM gathering, in the form of a salon, features demonstrations of floral art, Chinese painting and tea ceremony, and a guzheng performance. These activities allow members to understand Yun Shouping’s refined character and virtues. In addition to tasting special refreshments, members will also participate in lucky draws. It promises to be an intellectual and fun evening. We look forward to seeing you.

Flower arrangement demonstrations: Cindy Chao and Howard Pang

Chinese painting demonstration: Liu Chunhong

Guzheng: Wong On Kei

Tea ceremony: Liu Xiang
