The two works, one by the artist Gao Jianfu (高劍父, 1879-1951) and another by his disciple Guan Shanyue (關山月, 1912-2000), were purchased from Mr. Zhao Buzheng (趙不爭), a Macao local resident.
Since Li Xiaoyi (李孝頤) shared with the artist Gao Jianfu an important friendship when Gao was staying in Macao, Li asked Gao to paint a work of Chinese calligraphy for his son-in-law, Mr. Zhao Buzheng (趙不爭).
Guan Shanyue, disciple of Gao Jianfu, lived in Macao between 1939 and 1940. During this period the artist made an exhibition at the Fudan School, located at Rua Pedro Nolasco da Silva. Following this exhibition, Guan Shanyue offered one of the paintings dated 1939 to Zhao Buzheng. Later, in the year 1979, a dedication was added to the original painting by the calligrapher Lin Jin (林近, 1923-2004).
