Abstract:
Su Liupeng was one of Guangdong’s foremost professional painters in the mid-to-late Qing dynasty. He became known as one of the ‘Two Sus,’ alongside Su Renshan, and enjoyed an excellent reputation not only in Guangdong's painting history but also in the broader Chinese painting scene. A simple commoner, Su lived in Guangzhou — one of the most prosperous and vibrant commercial hubs of the time — and made a living selling his paintings in the city’s marketplace. His works span a wide range of themes, showcasing his comprehensive technical skills and exquisite style. He was proficient in figure, landscape, and bird-and-flower painting, and he particularly excelled at depicting human figures. Mastering the refined, archaic style of literati painting, Su also depicted figures from the lower strata of society, including blind people, street vendors, and performers, with a deeply humane and compassionate touch, thus recording the authentic diversity of everyday life in the city during his time. Reflecting a profound humanistic consciousness, his work foreshadowed the development of Guangdong genre painting and satirical caricature, and it has exerted a lasting influence.
