Section One : Shanghai – Experiment
This section traces the early sparks and incubation phase of Mio Pang Fei’s creativity. In the late 1970s, Chinese art was swept up in waves of Modernism, bringing with it the challenges of adapting these new influences to a local context. Mio’s bold experiments from this era prefigured his later Neo-Orientalism; rather than simply imitating Western Modernism, he sought a visual language that could engage with Eastern aesthetics. The works and documents here reveal this period as the formative moment for his artistic vision.
