Section Three :The Shui Hu Series
Drawing inspiration from the Liangshan heroes of Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin) as a contemporary deconstruction of Chinese classic literature, the artist distilled their essence into striking symbols that explore timeless questions of human nature, power, and order. No longer bound by their original ‘righteous ideal’, these figures became modern icons, embodying humanity’s entangled contradictions: courage laced with sorrow, ideals shadowed by alienation. Through the dismantling and reimagining of traditional tales, the artist channelled the classic text’s violence and redemption, as well as the tension between outlaw life and loyalty, into modern perspective. By reactivating ancient stories through a contemporary visual language, the artist breathed new life into age-old struggles between freedom and constraint, making them resonate with today’s art context.
