Echo the wind wanderer

Re-coding Macao

Echo rode on the wind and landed in an empty space,
where a tower stood right in the heart.

Everyone who walked past felt the urge to add a block,
hoping to help it stretch higher,
but the tower never stood quite as they wished.
It was mischievous.
One moment it would sway and bow low,
the next it would tumble over in a heap,
because everyone’s blocks were different.

Echo found she couldn’t carry those blocks at all.
So she knelt on the ground
and drew an oval shape – like a seed.

A child walked over and followed suit.
A baker sketched a loaf of bread.
A fisherman etched a ripple of waves.
And a seagull from the sky drew a patch of cloud…

Soon, the earth itself began to bloom with shapes:
curving lines unfurled into winding paths,
squared shapes hinted at windows,
round ones shimmered as puddles.
Those triangles might be rooftops;
the ones curled up like question marks…
Ah, no – they were cat tails.

People lowered their heads and walked,
studying these symbols.
When they came to something amusing, they laughed.
When they puzzled over a shape, they made a guess.
It wouldn’t matter if you made a wrong guess.

For in every mistaken guess,
new stories would grow.

Sometime – no one knew exactly when –
the tower quietly crumbled away.
But by then, no one bothered to look up at it.
They were busy studying the world beneath their feet –
the world that had just begun to shape.
